Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure, the Ford family was looked after by her grandmother, mom and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian, which became part of her resume in 1996.
